How Ultherapy® Works

At Hampshire Dermatology, Dr. White will work with you to develop a personal Ultherapy plan that reflects your individual needs and concerns.

Ultherapy uses the power of Ultrasound, which means it’s non-surgical, requires no anesthesia, and is completely non-invasive.  You’ll achieve long-lasting natural results with minimal or no downtime.

Ultherapy Before and After

Exceptional Outcomes

Because Ultherapy works by stimulating your body to produce collagen, results take several months to fully emerge.  Many patients see improvement at 8-12 weeks. Our experience at Hampshire Dermatology shows continued natural improvement in laxity and skin quality for 4-6 months post-treatment.

Your Ultherapy® Questions Answered

What is unique about Ultherapy®?

Ultherapy is the only non-invasive treatment cleared by the FDA to lift skin. Ultherapy uses ultrasound energy in two ways. Ultrasound imaging allows Dr. White to visualize the layers of tissue targeted during the treatment to insure the energy is deposited to where it will be most beneficial.  Ultrasound imaging enables Dr. White to customize the treatment to you specifically. Ultherapy works by delivering microfocused ultrasound energy to specific layers of the tissue to generate collagen production.

With the addition of the new Ultherapy® Décolletage Treatment, Ultherapy is also now the only non-invasive procedure specifically indicated by the FDA to improve lines and wrinkles on the chest.

Can Ultherapy® replace a face lift?

Ultherapy treats the deep foundational layer addressed in cosmetic surgery, but won’t duplicate the results of a facelift. Ultherapy is a great alternative, however, especially for those not ready for or interested in surgery, or for patients looking to extend the effects of cosmetic surgery.  Ultherapy is non-invasive and non-surgical. In many ways, a surgical facelift and Ultherapy can be complementary. In your consultation, Dr. White will talk to you about your goals and concerns and help you determine what’s best for you.

How does Ultherapy® differ from laser treatments?

Ultherapy uses the energy of sound (ultrasound) which has unique properties that allow it to bypass the surface of the skin to treat depths not matched by any other non-invasive cosmetic device. Ultherapy ultrasound stimulates collagen production (neocollagenesis) in the skin’s foundation, resulting in a clinically significant lift of tissue over several months.

Lasers use the energy of light to treat a range of conditions (brown spots, visible blood vessels, etc) more superficial on the skin.  Since Ultherapy and lasers often treat different skin issues, they may be complementary treatments. Radiofrequency (RF) uses radio waves to treat the tissue and lacks direct visualization of tissue depth.

How does Ultherapy® stimulate the creation of collagen?

Ultherapy deposits focused ultrasound energy deep beneath the skin at the optimal temperature for collagen regeneration. The treatment jump-starts a natural process, known as neocollagenesis, to produce fresh, new collagen. Ultherapy doesn’t involve any creams, fillers or toxins; it just relies on your body’s own collagen-building process for natural, noticeable results.

How long does a treatment take?

Treatment time ranges from 30-75 minutes, depending on the area(s) treated.

What does the Ultherapy® treatment feel like?

As the ultrasound energy is delivered, you will feel tiny amounts of energy being deposited to precise depths.  It may feel briefly stingy or prickly, with a sensation of heat. At your consultation, Dr. White will discuss options to make your treatment comfortable.  Comfort levels vary from person to person, but the sensation only lasts while the ultrasound energy is being delivered. We find our patients tolerate the procedure very well at Hampshire Dermatology.

How many Ultherapy® treatments will I need?

Most patients only need one treatment. However, based on the degree of skin laxity, the biological response to ultrasound energy and the individual’s collagen-building process, some patients benefit from additional treatments. Because skin continues to age, future touch-up treatments can help patients keep pace with the body’s natural aging process.  In Dr. White’s experience, many patients come back to treat additional areas. In general, older patients and individuals with more laxity may need additional treatments.

Are there any side effects?

The skin might appear flushed at first, but the redness should disappear within a few hours. Some patients experience slight swelling, tingling or tenderness to the touch, but these are temporary and mild. Other, less common post-procedural effects may include temporary bruising or numbness on small areas of skin. Your consultation with Dr. White will include a review of your medical history to determine if Ultherapy is right for you.

Ultherapy has an excellent safety profile.  Click here for full product and safety information.

How much does an Ultherapy® procedure cost?

The cost of the procedure depends on several factors including the area(s) to be treated and treatment protocol.  Procedure costs will be discussed at your consultation.

Who is a good candidate for Ultherapy®?

A good Ultherapy candidate has mild to moderate skin laxity where the skin begins to feel and look less firm. Examples include a lowered eyebrow line, loose skin on the neck, sagging under the chin, and lines or wrinkles on the chest. The best way to find out if you’re an Ultherapy candidate is to set up a consultation with Dr. White.

What kind of results can I expect?

Because Ultherapy works by stimulating your body to produce collagen, results take several months to fully emerge.  Many patients see improvement at 2-3 months, but our experience at Hampshire Dermatology shows continued improvement in laxity and skin quality for 4-6 months post-treatment.

For most patients, the results last several years.  Ultherapy stimulates new collagen to lift and tighten the skin, but (alas!) the aging process continues.  At Hampshire Dermatology we encourage a holistic approach to protect your skin, with good skin care, sun avoidance, and healthy habits to enhance your results.

Does it look natural?

Ultherapy relies on your body’s own response to the treatment – building new collagen – so results appear natural.  In contrast to fillers and surgery, Ultherapy is non-invasive and non-surgical.
